Mid-Scale Drivers of Variability in Dry Mixed-Conifer Forests of the Mogollon Rim, Arizona

چکیده
The structure and composition of southwestern dry mixed-conifer forests have changed significantly, decreasing forest resiliency to uncharacteristic disturbances which also threaten ecosystem services. Restoration these can be informed by historical conditions; however, managers researchers still lack a full understanding how environmental factors influence conditions. We investigated contemporary variability in northern Arizona identified important drivers. utilized sample plots dendrochronological reconstruction modelling describe conditions 1879 2014, respectively. used correlogram analysis compare spatial autocorrelation average diameter, basal area tree density, structural equation modeling partition the causal pathways between structure, composition, suite reflecting climate, topography, soil. Historical (1879) reconstructed had significantly fewer trees, lower area, higher diameter than contemporarily (2014). Composition has shifted from ponderosa pine dominance towards more mixed-species composition. Historically, did not exhibit strong autocorrelation, but density were strongly autocorrelated. Environmental described little variation are for Managers utilize this increased tailor silvicultural prescriptions templates.

15 صفحه اولCharacteristics of snags containing excavated cavities in northern Arizona mixed-conifer and ponderosa pine forests
Snags provide an important resource for a rich assemblage of cavity-nesting birds in the southwestern United States. To expand our knowledge of snag use by cavity-nesting birds in this region, we documented characteristics of snags with and without excavated cavities in mixed-conifer and ponderosa pine (Pinus ponderosa Dougl. ex Laws) forest in north-central Arizona. Snags were sampled in 113 s...
متن کاملSpeciation at the Mogollon Rim in the Arizona Mountain Kingsnake (Lampropeltis pyromelana).
Studies of speciation and taxon delimitation are usually decoupled. Combining these methods provides a stronger theoretical ground for recognizing new taxa and understanding processes of speciation. Using coalescent methods, we examine speciation, post-speciation population demographics, and taxon delimitation in the Arizona Mountain Kingsnake (Lampropeltis pyromelana), a species restricted to ...
متن کاملEffects of Fire Interval Restoration on Carbon and Nitrogen in Limestone- and Basalt-derivedsoils of the Mogollon Rim, Arizona
Prescribed fire was returned into over-stocked ponderosa pine stands on the Mogollon Rim of Arizona for the purpose of restoring fire into the ecosystem and removing fuel buildups. Prescribed fires have been ignited at intervals of 1, 2, 4, 6, 8, and 10 years to determine the best fire return interval for Southwest ponderosa pine ecosystems. Two sites were treated; one on volcanic-derived soils...
